Even before I had it, I noticed that there were students that really enjoyed reading about the sex lives of the characters in the novel. I realized that there are topics that many students wanted to discuss. A few topics that came up during my discussion with my students included sex and religion in the book.We read a lot about the sexual behavior of the characters in the book. I also mentioned how the scene where Noah first has sex with a form of animal prompted many Christian students to become even more committed to their faith. They became even more focused on the topic of sexuality. Many students mentioned that it was a big change for them to accept sexual activity between animals as acceptable. But they also said that they loved the portrayal of sex between animals and that it was refreshing.Another essay topics that students have asked me about i s one where I asked the class to read a short article on the gay community. I was surprised that there were some students who did not want to read that article because they were afraid it would turn into an opinion piece. Other students were more worried that they would offend the gay community.What bothers me most about the debate about sexual activity between animals and gay marriage is the argument that homosexual acts violate the basic human rights of the two people involved. I could not disagree more with that premise. Homosexuality is not a human right, nor is it a moral issue. It is simply a sexual activity between consenting adults. And what about the animals involved?Animals in Paradise Lost engage in sexual activity all the time. It's not as if they are saving themselves from sexual predators. If anything, the sexual acts between humans and animals are fun. In fact, these activities may serve to further the species' survival.My challenge to the students who want to discuss the sexual activity between animals and gay marriage is to focus on the facts. The problems that gay couples face are often just as valid as the problems faced by animals. Some of the problems faced by gay couples may be caused by society. Others may be related to financial issues. If you are able to properly contextualize the debate, you will be better equipped to respond to the points being made.It is amazing to me that people want to debate the issue of gay marriage while completely ignoring the fact that sexual activity between animals and homosexuals is normal and sometimes even healthy.
